Hispanic Heritage Month: Honoring Culture, History, and Leadership

Community & Social
Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month – Celebrating & embracing diversity

At Marian University Preparatory School, we believe that celebrating diversity is essential to building strong leaders who can thrive in a global community. Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, is a time to recognize and honor the culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. It is also an opportunity for our families to instill in their children a deep understanding of the rich diversity that shapes our world, fostering a sense of cultural pride and awareness.

Why Hispanic Heritage Month Matters

This yearly observance traces its roots back to 1968 when President Lyndon B. Johnson initiated Hispanic Heritage Week. It was later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. The dates, September 15 to October 15, coincide with the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile. This period also recognizes the significant contributions of Hispanic Americans in areas such as politics, education, the arts, business, and science.

At MU Prep, we understand the importance of embracing cultural heritage as part of a well-rounded education. Celebrating allows students to connect with diverse perspectives, enhancing their academic and social growth.

The Power of Representation in Education

For Hispanic families, representation in education is vital. When students see themselves and their communities reflected in what they learn, it empowers them to envision their own potential as leaders. Hispanic Heritage Month gives us a chance to:

  • Spotlight trailblazing figures like Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic woman on the U.S. Supreme Court, and Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman to go to space.
  • Inspire students, especially Hispanic students in our district, to aim high and pursue their dreams.
  • Cultivate an inclusive environment that respects and values all cultures.

We encourage parents and students to explore the rich history and diverse voices of the Hispanic community through reading, discussions, and family activities. Through these experiences, students can develop leadership skills rooted in empathy, understanding, and respect for others.

Ways to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month as a Family

Read Diverse Books

One of the best ways to celebrate is by reading books that explore Hispanic culture and history. Reading as a family can open the door to important conversations about identity, diversity, and leadership. Whether your child is interested in fiction, biographies, or historical accounts, there’s something for every age.

Explore Hispanic Art and Music

From Frida Kahlo’s iconic paintings to the vibrant rhythms of salsa and mariachi music, Hispanic art and culture are rich with inspiration. As a family, take the time to explore these creative expressions and talk about how they have shaped global culture.

Learn About Hispanic Traditions

Engage with the vibrant traditions and holidays that are important in Hispanic cultures, such as Día de los Muertos and Las Posadas. Discussing the significance of these celebrations can help children appreciate the depth of Hispanic heritage.

Encourage Storytelling

If you have Hispanic roots, this is a great opportunity to share family stories and traditions with your children. Encourage them to ask questions about their heritage and help them connect with their cultural identity.

Dive Into Hispanic Heritage Must-Read Books

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we invite our families to take advantage of resources that highlight the stories and voices of Hispanic and Latino communities.
